LIGHTING LAB NATHANIELROHR.COM

Terms of Use

Terms of Use.

Effective October 3, 2026. Applies to lightinglab.nathanielrohr.com.

1. The agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and Nathaniel Rohr ("we", "us"), the publisher of Lighting Lab at lightinglab.nathanielrohr.com. By using the lab, creating an account or buying Lighting Lab Pro you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle information and is part of this agreement.

2. The service

Lighting Lab is an educational simulator. It models studio flash with the inverse square law and standard modifiers so you can learn and plan lighting. It is a teaching tool, not a measurement instrument: real equipment, rooms and subjects differ, and you are responsible for your own shoots. The free tier works without an account. Lighting Lab Pro unlocks more lights, modifiers, gels, scenes, uniform kits, PDF export, the Shoot Planner and cloud-saved setups, as described on the about page at the time of purchase.

3. Accounts

  • Accounts are created when you buy Pro; there is no separate sign-up. You must be at least 16 years old to hold an account and at least 18 to make a purchase, or have a parent or guardian do so for you.
  • Keep your password private. You are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us at once if you believe it has been used without your permission.
  • One account is for one person. Schools and teams that need several seats should email us.

4. Plans, payment and renewal

Pro is sold as a monthly subscription, an annual subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in US dollars before you pay and may include tax where required. Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's terms.

  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period at the then-current price until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from the account page (Manage billing); access continues until the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, we keep Pro on for 5 days while Stripe retries. If payment is still not made, your plan returns to free. Your saved setups remain readable and deletable; saving new ones requires an active plan.
  • Lifetime means for the life of the Lighting Lab service, for one person, with no further payments. If we ever discontinue the service, see section 10.
  • We may change prices for new purchases and renewals with at least 30 days' notice to subscribers by email.

5. Cancellation and refunds

  • Subscriptions: cancel any time; no refunds for the current period, except where the law requires one.
  • Lifetime: a full refund if you ask within 14 days of purchase by emailing nrohr@nathanielrohr.com. After 14 days, lifetime purchases are not refundable except where the law requires.
  • If we refund a purchase, Pro access ends when the refund is issued.
  • Nothing in these terms limits refund rights you have under the consumer law where you live.

6. Acceptable use

You may use the lab for learning, teaching, planning and presenting your own lighting work, including commercial photography work. You may not:

  • share your account or resell access;
  • copy, redistribute or sell the lab's code, models, textures or uniform kits, or build a competing service from them;
  • interfere with the service, probe its security, or use it to send unsolicited messages;
  • upload a team logo or other content you do not have the right to use, or content that is unlawful or hateful.

7. Your content and our content

Yours. Setups you build, logos you upload and PDFs you export are yours. You give us only the permission needed to store and display saved setups back to you. Use exported images and PDFs however you like, including commercially.

Ours. The lab's software, design, 3D figures, textures, uniform kits and written content belong to Nathaniel Rohr and are protected by copyright. The uniform kits are generic sports designs and carry no team's trademarks; the "NR" mark is ours. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the lab under these terms.

8. No warranty

The lab is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that its simulations match any particular real-world result. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, data or business, arising from your use of the lab. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or 50 US dollars if you paid nothing. Some places do not allow these limits; where that is so, they apply to the extent permitted.

10. Termination

You may stop using the lab at any time and delete your account from the account page. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, after telling you why unless the law prevents it. If we discontinue Lighting Lab entirely, we will give at least 90 days' notice by email and on the site, make saved setups exportable during that time, and refund lifetime purchasers a pro-rated amount if the purchase was made within the previous 24 months.

11. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and consumer protections of the place where you live that cannot be waived still apply. If we have a dispute, email us first and we will try to resolve it within 30 days. Otherwise, disputes go to the state or federal courts located in Illinois, and both of us agree to their jurisdiction. Nothing here prevents you from using a small-claims court where you live.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For material changes we will update the date at the top and notify account holders by email or on the account page at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the lab after that date means you accept the new terms; if you do not, cancel and we will treat any refund request under section 5.
